What are Solar panels?
A collection of photovoltaic cells is called a solar panel, and these photovoltaic cells can generate electricity using the photovoltaic effect. These photovoltaic cells are arranged in a grid-like pattern on the surface of solar panels. Solar panels convert Solar energy to electrical, thermal and kinetic energy through the photovoltaic effect.
Why use Solar panels?
Solar panels help reduce global warming, increase on-grid power generation, and are sustainable, accessible, and always available. Solar panels increase on-grid power generation. Solar power is renewable, cost-free, and constantly available. Solar panels can reduce the pollution level in our environment and are also economically efficient.
How do Solar panels work?
The solar panels produce DC power when sufficient solar radiation is present during the day. An MPPT Charge Controller unit maximises this DC power. The remaining power is transferred through the charge controller to the battery bank and stored, while a portion of it is supplied directly to an AC load via an inverter and charge controller (a DC to DC converter). It is extracted from the battery bank and fed to the DC-DC converter when needed. The load is linked to the AC power produced by the inverter once the DC-DC converter has been connected.
Types of Solar panels
In India, there are two different kinds of solar panels accessible, namely:
Mono-crystalline Solar Panel: It is made of mono-PERC cells with suitable sizes that provide higher power and are made of pure silicon cells, giving it a dark appearance.
Polycrystalline solar panels: They are conventional solar panels that are widely used, less expensive, and have lower power production.
Solar panels maintenance
Although solar panels require little maintenance, cleaning them regularly is necessary to remove the dust that accumulates on them. A cleaner solar panel could produce up to 10% more power. Solar panel maintenance costs are minimal. Most solar panels contain laminated and framed silicon cells, ensuring long life and minimal maintenance.
Solar panels must be regularly cleaned and washed to maintain durability and performance.
- Ensure that solar panels are not shaded.
- The solar panel can be cleaned most effectively as advised by manufacturers.
- Try to avoid scratching the glass when cleaning.
